Service Description: The Phytoplankton Monitoring Network (PMN) was established as an outreach program for monitoring marine phytoplankton and harmful algal blooms (HABs). By linking the general public to laboratory scientists, the PMN helps to build a more informed public while providing useful data to scientists. PMN volunteers are trained by NOAA staff on sampling techniques and identification methods for marine phytoplankton. There are over 50 genera on the volunteer data sheets, including 8 potentially toxin producing genera of dinoflagellates and diatoms.
