Description: A map service providing access to NOS Seabed Descriptions. This database contains surficial sediment descriptions for over 200,000 seafloor samples primarily in U.S. Coastal areas. Descriptions were created during hydrographic surveys conducted by the the NOAA National Ocean Service (NOS) and its predecessor, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USCGS). Information in this data set was primarily derived from log sheets coded by staff of the Smithsonian Institution, but also contains material abstracted from unpublished data reports by NOS staff and descriptions digitized from survey smooth sheets through various contracts managed by NGDC. Post-2011 survey data are sent to NGDC by NOS in digital form. For more information, please see: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geosamples/survey.jsp.
